Limiting sugar intake during the first 1,000 days after conception, encompassing sugar intake before age 2, is associated with lower risks of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, depression and anxiety later in life, according to a study published July 22, though researchers say the findings do not prove cause and effect.
A study published July 22 in npj Aging analyzed data from more than 60,000 participants in the UK Biobank and found that people exposed to lower sugar intake before birth and through age 2 showed better brain health decades later.
Researchers reported that participants with restricted early sugar exposure had a 27% lower risk of developing dementia and a 46% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared with those who consumed more sugar during the same developmental period.
The study also found an 11% lower risk of depression and a 20% lower risk of anxiety among individuals who had lower sugar exposure early in life. MRI scans from a subset of participants showed their brains appeared, on average, 0.39 years younger than their chronological age.
Limiting sugar in early life may protect brain health
Researchers said the first 1,000 days after conception represent a critical period for brain development because nutrition during that time may shape long-term health.
“We believe the lasting protective effect is rooted in metabolic programming during the first 1,000 days. This is a critical window when the brain undergoes rapid development and is highly sensitive to nutritional cues,” senior author Bing Zhang, a geriatric medicine researcher at Guangzhou Medical University, told ScienceAlert.
The findings add to growing evidence that early-life nutrition may influence cognitive health decades later. However, the researchers did not conclude that sugar alone determines future dementia risk.
Experts urge caution over observational findings
Independent experts emphasized that the research identifies an association, not direct evidence, that reducing sugar intake before age 2 prevents dementia.
“This means it can identify links between diet and dementia risk, but it cannot prove that eating less sugar directly prevents dementia,” Dr. Sara Rodrigues of Alzheimer’s Research UK told the BBC.
Because the study is observational, researchers cannot rule out the influence of other factors, such as genetics, socioeconomic conditions or overall lifestyle, that may also contribute to brain health outcomes.
Balanced diet remains key to long-term brain health
Health experts said the findings reinforce existing recommendations to monitor sugar intake before age 2 and provide nutritious diets during pregnancy and early childhood while avoiding excessive added sugars.
Rodrigues said maintaining healthy eating habits benefits brain health throughout life. “Eating a healthy, balanced diet is one of the best ways to support your brain health, and it’s never too late to make positive changes,” she told the BBC.
The study’s authors, whose findings appeared in the peer-reviewed journal npj Aging, said additional research, including long-term clinical studies, is needed to better understand how early nutrition affects the risk of neurodegenerative diseases later in life.
