The HSE has launched an MMR vaccines catch-up program in community vaccination clinics across Sligo and Leitrim. This initiative comes as a response to a growing concern over the rise in measles cases across the UK and Europe, aiming to protect key groups who may have missed their vaccines in the past.

Addressing the Measles Outbreak

The MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine catch-up campaign is a critical public health measure in light of the recent increase in measles cases. Measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to severe complications, especially in vulnerable groups such as children under one year, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The HSE has emphasized that the MMR vaccine is the only effective protection against measles. To ensure full immunity, two doses of the vaccine are required. The catch-up campaign is particularly focused on children, young adults, and health and care workers who may not have received their full vaccination in the past.

Vaccination Clinics in Leitrim and Sligo

The MMR vaccine is being made available at various community vaccination centres across Leitrim and Sligo. These vaccines are offered free of charge to all eligible groups, primarily focusing on those under 18 years old. In Leitrim, the vaccine can be accessed at the Leitrim Vaccination Centre, located on Leitrim Road, Carrick-on-Shannon (N41 XC59). For those in Sligo, a walk-in clinic will be held on August 16 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Clarion Road, Sligo Town (F91 CD34).

In addition to these locations, MMR vaccines can also be obtained from General Practitioners (GPs) and other HSE community clinics. A complete list of vaccination clinics is available on the HSE website for easy access to information on where to get vaccinated.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

The HSE is urging everyone born in Ireland from January 1, 1978, without proof of receiving two MMR vaccines, to avail of this opportunity. This also applies to anyone born outside Ireland who lacks documentation of receiving two doses of the vaccine.

For families planning to travel outside of Ireland, the HSE now offers the option to vaccinate babies between 6 and 11 months old before departure. These babies should then follow up with the standard vaccination schedule at 12 months and receive the final dose when they enter junior infants.

Importance of Measles Vaccination

Measles remains one of the most infectious diseases globally, with the potential to cause severe health complications. The MMR vaccine has been proven safe and effective in preventing the disease. The current catch-up campaign is part of the HSE’s broader effort to ensure public health safety and prevent further outbreaks.

For more information on the symptoms of measles and the MMR vaccine, individuals are encouraged to visit the HSE’s official website. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of measles, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly. The HSE advises calling ahead before visiting any healthcare provider to inform them about the symptoms.

By taking advantage of this vaccination opportunity, individuals can contribute to the overall health and safety of the community, helping to curb the spread of measles in Ireland.
