Country Eggs Recalled for Salmonella Contamination in 14 States | Healthcare 360 Magazine

Cage-free eggs produced by Country Eggs, a supplier in Lucerne Valley, California, have been recalled following a salmonella contamination linked to nearly 100 reported illnesses across 14 states. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 95 individuals have fallen ill and 18 have required hospitalization. No deaths have been reported.

The affected eggs, sold primarily in California and Nevada between June 16 and July 9, 2025, have been pulled from grocery shelves and food service suppliers. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating the contamination, while the company has suspended production of the impacted product lines.

Brands and Products Involved in Recall

The recall involves Country Eggs Large Brown Cage Free Sunshine Yolks, sold in grocery stores under several brand names including:

  • Nagatoshi Produce – Sell by dates July 1, 2025 through Sept. 16, 2025, Code No. CA 7695

Consumers who purchased the recalled products are urged to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund or dispose of them safely.

Impact on Industry and Public Health

The recall comes just two months after a separate salmonella-related Cage-free eggs recall affected nearly 2 million eggs nationwide, raising questions about the egg industry’s safety practices. Disruptions are being felt by grocery chains, restaurants, and food distributors that rely heavily on steady egg supplies, especially in California where the demand for cage-free products is high.

Food safety experts emphasize that Salmonella Contamination outbreaks can carry significant costs for both the food industry and healthcare systems. Retailers face supply chain challenges and consumer trust issues, while hospitals must manage preventable cases of severe illness.

Country Eggs has pledged corrective measures and issued a statement assuring customers of its commitment to food safety. The company noted, “Supporting our customers and restoring trust is our top priority as we work with regulators to address this situation.”

Salmonella Contamination Risks and Symptoms

Salmonella Contamination is a food-borne bacteria that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, and abdominal pain. Symptoms usually appear within eight to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food and last up to a week in otherwise healthy adults.

While many recover without medical treatment, vulnerable groups, including infants, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk of severe complications. In some cases, the infection may lead to bacteremia, a condition where the bacteria enters the bloodstream and spreads to other organs, posing life-threatening risks.

Healthcare providers caution that anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea, high fever, or dehydration after consuming eggs should seek medical care immediately.
