Four-state alliance introduces seasonal vaccine guidance ahead of winter virus surge. Governors from California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii announced a coordinated set of vaccine recommendations Wednesday, highlighting a unified effort to protect residents from COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. The alliance, known as the West Coast health alliance, said the guidance aims to provide clear, science-based information to help communities prepare for the winter season.
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB144 earlier this week, a law allowing the state to base its immunization guidelines on independent medical and scientific organizations. The measure enables California and its partner states to align recommendations with expert groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
“Our states are united in putting science, safety, and transparency first, and in protecting families with clear, credible vaccine guidance,” the governors said in a joint statement.
West Coast Health Alliance Guidance Prioritizes Vulnerable Populations
The California Department of Public Health and West Coast Health Alliance said the new approach is designed to ensure equitable access to vaccines and screenings, especially for groups most at risk of severe illness. These include older adults, children under five, pregnant people, residents of long-term care facilities, and individuals with chronic conditions.
Dr. Eric Ball, a pediatrician in California, said the West Coast health alliance guidelines bring consistency for both healthcare providers and families. “There’s a lot of different messages that are coming out from different entities, and it’s nice to have a unified message from these states that are based on expert recommendations of trusted medical sources,” he explained.
Ball noted that the recommendations also account for family circumstances, such as households with immunocompromised members. “These guidelines allow for vaccination based on high-risk conditions,” he said. “That kind of consideration can make a big difference in protecting families.”
Experts Welcome Coordinated Approach
Public health experts emphasized that the collaborative effort provides clarity at a critical time. Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, said the West Coast health alliance recommendations simplify vaccine guidance and make it easier for communities to follow. “Simplicity and minimalism is everything,” he said. “The fewer barriers people face, the more likely they are to take part.”
Alliance leaders stressed that seasonal vaccines remain one of the most effective tools for reducing severe illness, limiting transmission, and preventing strain on hospitals. California Department of Public Health Director Dr. Erica Pan said the states are working together to provide data-driven recommendations that people can trust.
Oregon Health Director Dr. Sejal Hathi called vaccines “a critical tool to prevent severe illness and death,” while Washington’s Health Secretary Dennis Worsham said the joint guidance is designed to empower local communities. Hawaii’s Health Director Kenneth Fink added that the coordinated approach reflects the strength of a shared, science-based commitment to resident well-being.
Building Trust Through Science-Based Action
Health officials emphasized that the coordinated recommendations are designed to build public confidence by relying on the expertise of certified physicians and subject matter specialists. The alliance said its strategy reflects a long-term commitment to ensuring residents receive accurate information and timely protection against preventable diseases.
By working together, the four states hope to create a model of cooperation that strengthens public health while giving communities consistent, science-based guidance. As the winter season approaches, the West Coast health alliance underscored that protecting residents remains the top priority.
