The individual experienced mild symptoms, was treated with antiviral medication, and is currently recovering at home.

Emergency Declared as Bird Flu Spreads first human case of bird flu reported in Los Angeles
On December 18, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as bird flu cases were detected in dairy cows on farms in Southern California. The virus had previously been identified in the state’s Central Valley, raising concerns about its spread.
The emergency declaration aims to provide government agencies with the necessary resources and flexibility to respond effectively to the outbreak, according to state officials.
Symptoms and Risks of Bird Flu in Humans
Health authorities warn that individuals working with infected animals, such as cows, poultry, or wildlife, are at a higher risk of exposure to the virus. Symptoms of bird flu in humans can include eye redness or discharge, fever, cough, difficulty breathing, sore throat, muscle aches, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Los Angeles County health officer Muntu Davis urged people to take precautions to avoid exposure to the virus. Those who interact with infected livestock or wildlife face an increased risk of infection. This case serves as a reminder to take basic preventive measures, such as avoiding unprotected contact with sick or dead animals, including cows, poultry, and wild birds.
Health officials also advised against consuming raw or undercooked animal products, such as raw milk. Additionally, pets and backyard poultry should be protected from exposure to wild animals to reduce the risk of infection.
Seasonal Flu Vaccine Recommended First Human Case Of Bird Flu Reported in Los Angeles
To further mitigate risks, health experts recommend receiving the seasonal flu vaccine. This vaccine can help prevent severe cases of seasonal flu and lower the chances of simultaneous infections with both seasonal flu and bird flu in cases of exposure.
As the bird flu outbreak continues to spread, state and local officials are focused on containment efforts and public awareness to minimize risks to both humans and animals. While the risk to the general population remains low, those in close contact with infected livestock or wildlife are encouraged to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines.
