Tulsa’s Jarman Elementary School turned into a dental wellness hub on Tuesday as the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation brought its Mobile Cavity Clinic to second-grade students. The initiative, which provides vital dental care at no cost, included services like dental sealants, fluoride treatments, and educational resources aimed at improving long-term oral health. The clinic, staffed by Delta Dental representatives and contracted registered dental hygienists, delivered care directly to children who might otherwise go without it.
Terrisa Singleton, Director of the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation, explained the importance of early intervention. “Dental sealants are a clear, plastic coating that’s placed on the back teeth to seal out cavity-producing bacteria,” she said. With this effort, the foundation is targeting children at the optimal age—typically when their permanent molars begin to erupt, around second and sixth grade.
Bridging the Delta Dental Care Gap in Oklahoma Schools
Recognized as the state’s largest supporter of dental health education and care, the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation launched its Mobile Cavity Clinic to serve communities in need. “This community outreach initiative provides free, preventive dental services to young Oklahomans who otherwise might not be able to receive it,” the organization stated. Singleton emphasized that while the ideal dental care routine includes biannual visits to the dentist, many families face obstacles in accessing timely dental treatment.
“For some parents, it’s difficult to schedule or afford regular dental visits,” Singleton noted. “That’s when these clinics step in to fill the gap.” The program not only ensures students receive timely care, but also serves as a valuable reminder to parents to stay on top of their children’s dental health needs.
Importantly, the mobile clinic serves all children, regardless of whether they have dental insurance. It is a fully inclusive effort to remove barriers to care and ensure no child is left behind when it comes to oral health.
Creating Positive Dental Experiences Early On
Beyond delivering treatment, the clinic aims to create a welcoming and friendly dental experience for children—many of whom may be visiting a dental care provider for the first time. “We want to give kids a really positive experience,” Singleton said. “So, if they haven’t been to a dentist ever or in a long time, this helps them warm up to that idea. It builds comfort and trust.”
This early, positive exposure is key in encouraging lifelong oral health habits. The clinic’s visit often serves as an eye-opener for parents too, prompting them to schedule follow-up appointments with a dentist. By meeting children in schools—where they already feel safe and familiar—the foundation is able to make a greater impact on both children’s health and their attitudes toward dental care.
With continued visits planned across the state, the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation remains committed to improving access, education, and outcomes for the next generation of Oklahomans.
