A study published in the European Heart Journal finds that flu vaccination is associated with a lower risk of atrial fibrillation, heart attack, heart failure, and death, based on an analysis of health data from more than 1.1 million adults.

Study Connects Flu Vaccination to Lower AFib Risk

Researchers led by Dr. Laurent Fauchier of Trousseau University Hospital in Tours, France, reviewed electronic health records from the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network. The analysis included more than 1.1 million adults who attended routine health care visits in 2022.

Using propensity score matching, the researchers compared approximately 138,000 adults who received Flu Vaccination within the previous year with a similar-sized group that did not receive the vaccine. Participants were followed for an average of 2.7 years.

The study found annual atrial fibrillation rates of 0.89% among vaccinated patients compared with 1.12% among those who were not vaccinated. Vaccinated patients also experienced lower risks of all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, and heart failure.

Researchers Say Vaccines Support Heart Disease Prevention

The researchers said the results reinforce evidence that Flu Vaccination provides cardiovascular benefits in addition to preventing infection.

“Beyond preventing respiratory illness, accumulating evidence indicates that influenza vaccination confers cardiovascular protection,” Fauchier and his colleagues wrote in the study. They said previous randomized trials and observational studies have shown fewer deaths and cardiovascular hospitalizations among people at high risk, particularly those with heart failure or established cardiovascular disease.

The researchers also reported that the benefits remained consistent across different age groups and selected disease subgroups.

The researchers cautioned that the reduction in atrial fibrillation risk for individual patients was modest. However, they said even small reductions could produce meaningful public health benefits because atrial fibrillation is common and influenza vaccines have a well-established safety profile.

“From a clinical perspective, these findings support consideration of influenza vaccination as part of comprehensive cardiovascular and AFib prevention strategies in routine care,” the authors wrote.

They emphasized that influenza vaccination should not be viewed as a treatment aimed solely at preventing atrial fibrillation. Instead, they said it should be incorporated into broader strategies designed to reduce cardiovascular risk.

The study was published in the European Heart Journal and was based on observational data from the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network. While the analysis identified strong associations between Flu Vaccination and improved cardiovascular outcomes, the findings do not establish that influenza vaccination directly causes the reduction in atrial fibrillation or other cardiac events.
