A study of 64,761 Britons born from 1951 to 1956 found that Early Life Sugar Restriction was associated with lower rates of five cancers and signs of slower biological aging decades later.
Study Tracks Wartime Sugar Exposure
Researchers Chen Zhu of China Agricultural University and Weilong Zhang of the University of Cambridge used UK Biobank data to examine people born around the end of Britain’s postwar sugar rationing.
Sugar rationing ended Sept. 26, 1953, causing average adult sugar consumption to nearly double, from about 41 grams a day to 80 grams by mid-1954, according to the study.
The researchers treated the policy change as a natural experiment. People born earlier experienced more sugar restriction during the period from conception to age 2, while those born later experienced less or none.
The strongest association was with liver cancer. Participants exposed to Early Life Sugar Restriction throughout their first 1,000 days had a 69% lower incidence of liver cancer than those without early-life exposure to rationing. Prostate cancer incidence was 52% lower, while lung, rectal and breast cancer incidence was 41%, 40% and 36% lower, respectively.
Early Diet May Shape Lifelong Health
The study also found longer telomeres among people with greater early-life exposure to sugar rationing. Researchers estimated the difference was equivalent to about 2.2 years of slower biological aging.
The findings extended beyond biological markers. Adults who experienced sugar restriction during childhood still consumed less sugar, ate smaller quantities, and reported more diverse diets about five decades later.
“The level of sweetness people are exposed to very early in life may shape their taste preferences for a long time,” Zhang wrote in an article published by The Conversation.
He said early nutrition and sugar exposure could influence metabolism, organs and the immune system, while childhood exposure to less sweetness could establish food preferences that persist into adulthood.
The researchers also reported lower levels of granzyme B, a protein associated with long-term immune activity, among people with greater early-life rationing exposure.
Researchers Caution Against Overinterpreting Results
The study does not establish that sugar directly causes the cancers examined. The researchers described their approach as a natural experiment, but the analysis remains observational and cannot reproduce a randomized trial.
The authors also noted that they could not directly measure every participant’s sugar intake during infancy and childhood. Differences in later-life behavior and other factors could therefore contribute to the observed associations.
Zhang emphasized that the findings do not mean children should avoid sugar entirely or that wartime rationing was desirable. Instead, he said the historical evidence suggests that relatively small differences in sugar exposure during early development may leave measurable effects decades later.
The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It adds to earlier studies using Britain’s rationing period that have linked greater Early Life Sugar Restriction with lower risks of metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease and dementia.
