New research links Irregular Sleep Patterns fragmented sleep with faster biological aging and higher disease risks, while a separate Nature study finds the lowest aging measures among people sleeping about 6.4 to 7.8 hours nightly.

Irregular Sleep Raises Disease Risks

A 2026 study of 93,249 UK Biobank participants used wearable-device data to identify three distinct sleep patterns. People with greater Irregular Sleep Patterns or more fragmented and light sleep had higher risks of several age-related diseases and showed stronger associations with biological hallmarks of aging.

The study, published in Sleep, found that participants with more fragmented and light sleep had increased risks of 18 diseases, while those with highly irregular sleep had increased risks of 24 diseases. The irregular-sleep group had particularly higher risks of Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Researchers examined six sleep characteristics, including total sleep duration, rapid eye movement sleep, deep sleep, light sleep, waking after sleep onset and day-to-day sleep irregularity. The findings suggest that sleep quality and consistency may matter alongside the number of hours slept, including the effects of Irregular Sleep Patterns.

Nature Study Identifies Sleep Sweet Spot

A separate study published May 13 in Nature analyzed sleep duration against 23 biological aging clocks covering multiple organs and biological measurements in UK Biobank participants. Researchers found a U-shaped relationship, with both shorter and longer sleep associated with greater biological aging.

The lowest biological-age gaps generally occurred between 6.4 and 7.8 hours of sleep, although the optimal point varied by organ system and sex. Sleep of fewer than six hours or more than eight hours was associated with higher risks of systemic disease and death compared with six to eight hours.

Junhao Wen, the study’s lead researcher and an assistant professor at Columbia University, said the findings extend earlier research beyond the brain.

“Our study goes further and shows that too little and too much sleep are associated with faster aging in nearly every organ,” Wen said.

Wen cautioned that the findings do not establish that sleep duration alone causes organs to age faster. Instead, the results suggest that unusually short or long sleep may also signal poorer overall health.

Poor Sleep May Age The Brain

A 2025 study from Karolinska Institutet adds evidence linking poor sleep quality with an older-appearing brain. Researchers analyzed brain scans from about 27,500 UK Biobank participants and found that people with poor sleep had brains that appeared, on average, about one year older than their chronological age.

The study assessed sleep using factors including sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, daytime sleepiness and whether participants tended to be morning or evening people. Low-grade inflammation accounted for just over 10% of the association between poor sleep and older brain age.

“Our findings provide evidence that poor sleep may contribute to accelerated brain ageing and point to inflammation as one of the underlying mechanisms,” said Abigail Dove, the Karolinska Institutet researcher who led the study.

The researchers emphasized that the findings show associations rather than proof that poor sleep directly causes faster aging. Still, the studies point to sleep duration, quality, and Irregular Sleep Patterns as potentially important, modifiable factors in long-term health.
